Our stay at the Clayton Hotel American Amsterdam was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome with their warmth, professionalism, and attention to detail. The reception we received was gracious, setting the tone for a memorable experience. To our surprise and delight, we were given a marvelous upgrade that made our visit even more special—the room was elegant, comfortable, and beautifully appointed, reflecting the hotel’s charm and history. Every interaction with staff, from check-in to dining, exceeded expectations, as they consistently went out of their way to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. The hotel’s blend of classic character and modern amenities creates a truly unique atmosphere. If I were to suggest one small improvement, it would be to add more lighting in the bathroom to make it brighter and more functional. Overall, a wonderful stay I’d highly recommend.

Rooms are a bit tight and sound proofing could be better. Beds are super comfy, dark, good air con and great location

The impression from the outside was special and impressive as the bulding is a real eye catcher, also the site itself is top notch, everything is easily walkable in comfortable distances. The hotel itself, frankly I expected a bit more from an accommodation in this price range and class. The rooms would desperately need a renovation, the trash for bin for example was an old and clappering silver thing, which could be easily upgraded. The bathroom was also very cold and the thermostat inside could only be regulated by the house keeping. No necessity kits in the room available. The kettle smelt musty so I've opted for better not getting any coffee or tea in the room. The service (here only hotel check-in and checkout) was okay nothing overwhelming or overly friendly. But the gentleman at the mezzanine (David) was outstandingly charming and helpful, so was the personnel at the bar in the evening, the service and drinks there were fantastic. We had breakfast a la carte which was good. It is a sound hotel but certainly not a bargain considering what you get - honestly Amsterdam is apparently pricey no matter the accommodation. The location is surely on of the best to access Amsterdam in every direction!
