Our family came to Newcastle to attend the University of Newcastle Open Day. We had a two bedroom apartment which was large and comfortable. I was acknowledged at checkin of my Accor status and received a nice note and welcome gifts from the Manager. The hotel had parking for our cars which was very affordable. The hotel is also located close to restaurants and foreshore. We had a lovely stay!

Booked for 2 nights as part of work. Have stayed at plenty of Mercures in the past but this one just feels completely subpar. Three small oyster lights on the bedheads - one didnt work at all. No ceiling lights so the entire place is abysmally dark. Shower screen was held on with a few tubes of caulk and some prayers and the hinged door hit the shower tub every time you opened it. AC didnt maintain a temperature, either on full blast or nothing. Toilet fan exhaust is not able to be turned on or off manually - it was venting 24/7 our entire stay. The mini-fridge when we arrived had clearly thawed out then turned back on, as the long life milk cartons were soggy. Housekeeping staff were fine and reception lovely. Just clearly a neglected branch of the franchise that is a decade overdue for the rooms to be refurbished. I dont think I would have cared if it were a budget $100/night motel, but for >$250 a night, daylight robbery. Wouldnt recommend it at all, though the location is convenient. Dont usually leave a review, but was emailed asking for one so here you go.

This was by far the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. Payment Issues: Upon arrival, there was confusion regarding my payment. I had already paid in advance, but the hotel’s system failed to reflect this, possibly due to internal financial issues. As a result, I was asked to authorize the payment again, which was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. Dirty Room and Unhelpful Staff: The room was in unacceptable condition — dusty surfaces, a dirty toilet bowl, and a long hair strand left on the table. I requested cleaning twice, only to be told that housekeeping had already left for the day. While I understand it’s not the receptionist’s job to clean rooms, the attitude I received was dismissive and inappropriate. When she eventually did come to clean, she was visibly irritated. In the process, she knocked the TV remote, which hit my friend sitting on the other side of the room — completely avoidable and careless. I also sent an email outlining the payment and cleanliness issues, but never received a response. Bad Restaurant Experience: On our first night, we attempted to dine at the hotel’s restaurant. After waiting 10 minutes to be seated, the lone staff member told us, “I’m all by myself, please wait,” and ignored us further. We waited an additional 15 minutes without any service and eventually left to dine elsewhere. On a positive note, the breakfast staff the following morning were friendly and efficient — the only highlight of our stay. Overall Impression: I’ve stayed in Newcastle many times and usually have excellent experiences. Unfortunately, Mercure was a major letdown — from poor communication and dirty rooms to uncaring staff. I’ll definitely choose a different hotel next time.
