Not sure why this hotel only has such low rating. IMO, it ticks all the boxes. Convenient location, spacious room, comfy bed, and the room is relatively clean. It can be a bit noisy due to its location but when you close the windows, you can barely hear anything.

We travelled all the way from Perth to Newcastle for my wife’s graduation and chose to stay at Mercure Newcastle, mainly for its close proximity to the graduation venue and nearby shops. From the moment we arrived around 10AM on a Thursday, we were warmly welcomed by the staff. Though we couldn't check in early as rooms were still being cleaned, the hospitality was genuine and appreciated. We had booked three rooms, and the hotel made the thoughtful gesture of placing two of them side by side, which was incredibly convenient for our family. The rooms were compact but very comfortable and had everything we needed for a restful stay. Dinner at the hotel was absolutely delicious, and the buffet breakfast the next morning was fresh and satisfying a great start to our day. The only suggestion I’d make is regarding the parking. Driving a 4WD, I noticed the roof of the undercover parking was quite low, and my car lightly touched the ceiling. It would be great if there were alternative parking options for larger vehicles. Overall, we had a lovely stay. Thank you, Mercure Newcastle, for looking after us. We hope to return again, this time as leisure travellers ready to explore all that Newcastle has to offer.

We stayed here for one night and were quite disappointed. The room was very dated and not clean — there was hair all over the bathroom floor and in the shower. I immediately asked reception to have it cleaned. We even found cockroaches. The place was extremely noisy, and the bed and mattresses were old and uncomfortable. Breakfast was very good, with lots of variety, but the mugs for tea and coffee were dirty and stained. The only friendly staff member we encountered was at the bar; the rest made us feel like we were inconveniencing them. Overall, not recommended.

Booked for 2 nights as part of work. Have stayed at plenty of Mercures in the past but this one just feels completely subpar. Three small oyster lights on the bedheads - one didnt work at all. No ceiling lights so the entire place is abysmally dark. Shower screen was held on with a few tubes of caulk and some prayers and the hinged door hit the shower tub every time you opened it. AC didnt maintain a temperature, either on full blast or nothing. Toilet fan exhaust is not able to be turned on or off manually - it was venting 24/7 our entire stay. The mini-fridge when we arrived had clearly thawed out then turned back on, as the long life milk cartons were soggy. Housekeeping staff were fine and reception lovely. Just clearly a neglected branch of the franchise that is a decade overdue for the rooms to be refurbished. I dont think I would have cared if it were a budget $100/night motel, but for >$250 a night, daylight robbery. Wouldnt recommend it at all, though the location is convenient. Dont usually leave a review, but was emailed asking for one so here you go.
