With only 28 people permitted on the island at any time, you’ll be one of the privileged few to experience the raw beauty of this unspoilt tropical paradise, with 1,000 hectares of national park and pristine fringing reef teeming with around 1,100 species of fish.

What You’ll Love…

The Resort – An idyllic island paradise

Accessible only by helicopter from Townsville (at an additional charge), Orpheus Island Lodge provides guests with a truly secluded island experience with all the modern luxuries you’d expect of a private island lodge.

The island itself features 11km of immaculate coastline set within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed marine park. Guests can spend time snorkelling in colourful protected reefs, chilling out in a hammock hung between two palm trees or unwinding on one of the dreamy white-sand beaches. The island lodge is home to the main pavilion bar and alfresco-style dining area, a restaurant, a reading room, the Gwandalan Day Spa and a picture-perfect glittering infinity pool overlooking the Coral Sea.

Orpheus Island Lodge is a Tripadvisor 2020 Travelers’ Choice ‘Best of the Best’ award winner in the Top Small Hotels – Australia category. Its restaurant was also awarded a Chef’s Hat by the Australian Good Food Guide in 2019.

The Food – All meals included, crafted using the freshest seasonal produce and seafood

Gourmands will be in their element on Orpheus Island, where the bounty of the sea and the island’s very own vegetable garden are used to create exquisite dishes overseen by Head Chef James Egan.

Ease into sun-kissed island days with a fresh and delicious à la carte breakfast — including smoked salmon bagel with caper and dill cream cheese, and avocado smash with 63° egg, marinated feta and dukkah, accompanied by coffee, tea and juice.

Take a trip around the globe at lunchtime as you sample tapas from Italy, Thailand, Japan, the Middle East and beyond. Enjoy an array of flavour-filled dishes such as grilled halloumi with pistachio and pomegranate, Thai beef salad with nahm jim and Japanese karaage chicken. Alternatively, you might like to request a chef-prepared picnic hamper to enjoy as you explore the island.

If that’s whet your appetite, then wait for the pièce de résistance: your nightly four-course degustation dinner served overlooking the lapping waters of the Coral Sea. This is where the lodge’s gastronomical prowess truly shines, with dishes such as king prawn ceviche with smoked goat’s cheese and avocado lime mousse, venison tenderloin with roast plum, sour cherries and young turnips, and seared scallops with butternut pumpkin, edamame, jamon serrano and dashi. You might even choose to dine on fish caught by your own hand earlier in the day on a fishing expedition.

Plus, enjoy a bottle of French Champagne with chocolate-dipped strawberries on arrival, as well as a selection of quality Australian wines and beers and a fully stocked minibar and as part of your stay.

The Room – Light and luxurious with Coral Sea views

Light and airy with views of the Coral Sea, your North Beachfront Room offers laidback luxury complete with a plush king-sized bed and a private terrace where you can enjoy your morning coffee, prepared using your in-room coffee machine.

North Beachfront Suite Upgrade: Boasting a generous 56sqm of space, these plush suites come with spectacular Coral Sea views and a separate lounge room, providing a tranquil sanctuary for you to unwind in.

South Suite Upgrade: The most exclusive accommodation type on the island, the extra-spacious 68sqm South Suites offer a beautiful balance between contemporary and laidback luxe island aesthetic. Take advantage of the outdoor stone bathtub, bathroom with double vanity, a private courtyard surrounded by lush tropical gardens and airy open-plan design. Perfect for couples or honeymooners.

See & Do – Soak up the beauty of the island with complimentary activities

While the island’s picture-perfect infinity pool tempts guests to lazy days with a good book and cocktail in hand, each day you’ll be invited to join daily curated Orpheus experiences such as snorkelling, fishing, or a guided nature-based activity.

Alternatively, explore the island and surrounding coral-studded reefs and private coves at your own pace by motorised dinghy, kayak, paddle-board and catamaran.

You will also be given A$100 resort credit per room, redeemable towards spa treatments at the Gwandalan Day Spa, paid experiences and tours, cocktails and premium drinks.

Chrissie the GM runs a fabulous "ship" on Orpheus and also occasionally drives the boats used on the daily tours. All the staff we met, were wonderful and delightful. I hate to single out any one of them so I'll mention the following. Elyse (2IC to Chrissie and always at hand) Lily, Edo and his chefs (in charge of the magnificent cuisine at breakfast lunch and especially dinner). Jack the ebullient, helpful and knowledgeable waiter and sommelier! And more high praise to Mathilde, Sarah from Canada and Lachlan who helped us enjoy all the water activities from kayaks to snorkelling gear. Loved the boats! Our northern suite was expansive inside and out and conveniently located. Service was magnificent but exceeded our expectations at "Dinner with the Tides". Location was super romantic as we gazed at daily sunsets over water, enjoyed the lush gardens and firepit. And it is a great ride in the "chopper" to get here.

From the moment we touched down at Orpheus Island Lodge by helicopter, we knew we were in for something extraordinary. The sense of untouched beauty struck me immediately, and I spent most of our six-night stay outdoors, marvelling at the pristine beach and the ever-changing tide that framed the horizon like a living painting. The wildlife is simply spectacular. We watched black-tip reef sharks and graceful rays glide through the water, spotted sea snakes, eels, hermit crabs, and unique little fish darting through the mangroves. On land, I loved trying to befriend the cockatoos and trying to spot bandicoots at night. The infinity pool is a highlight — a flawless stretch of water overlooking the sea. It became my daily go-to spot for swims, reading, and sunset cocktails. We also loved the freedom of being able to take out kayaks, paddleboards, dinghies, or a small sailboat whenever we felt like it, all included in the stay. Being able to explore the surrounding waters at our own pace made the experience feel even more special and serene. Dining was a daily delight. Breakfast is à la carte (definitely go for the crab omelette!), served alongside fresh tropical fruit and pastries. But lunch was actually my favourite — served tapas-style, with a different regional cuisine featured each day. We loved it all: Mexican, Thai, Mediterranean, Japanese. And I’m pretty sure they had to do extra baking just to keep that jar of chocolate-chip cookies full for me. All meals, in-room snacks, and a selection of drinks are included, which meant I never had to think about cards or signatures once we arrived. It made the whole experience feel even more like a true holiday. The true standout at Orpheus for us was the people. Every member of the staff is warm, attentive, and genuinely happy to be there. Their diverse backgrounds added to the welcoming, global atmosphere. A special shout-out to Chrissy, the Kiwi manager whose calm efficiency and infectious smile set the tone for our stay. Every staff member we spoke with raved about her — it’s clear she looks after her team, and it shows in the care they give the guests. We also loved our behind-the-scenes tour of the lodge and were amazed by its fully solar-powered setup and how efficiently everything is run. Our snorkelling trip to the outer reef was another highlight. Vivid corals, giant clams, and the surreal experience of swimming above sharks and through schools of reef fish in crystal-clear water made it one of the best snorkel experiences I’ve ever had. The only downside for us was the lodge and pool music playing for our first few days. It felt like a playlist of the most annoying songs from the last 30 years, and a lot of odd covers. But when the Wi-Fi went down, the music improved dramatically (whoever had the backup playlist had excellent taste). On that note, there’s no Wi-Fi or streaming in the rooms, and the main lodge Wi-Fi was out for the rest of our stay. So be sure to download anything you might want to watch in case of rain or quiet evenings. Overall, Orpheus Island Lodge is pure magic. We already can’t wait to return and next time, we’re bringing the kids so they can discover this slice of paradise too.

Facilities and service were excellent and staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. In particular we would like thank Charlie, Chloe, Matilda and both Sarahs for always being friendly, always smiling and always obliging to go the extra mile. Christine the GM obviously runs a tight ship and has good repoor with the staff which results in a relaxing atmosphere.
