Highlights

The Hotel – Launceston’s slice of Australian history

Originally built in 1824, The Cornwall Historic Hotel is a truly iconic sight and a landmark building in Tasmania. Once the city’s leading hotel, The Cornwall Historic Hotel played a significant part in Australian history. As well as hosting countless banquets, balls and public meetings, this famed hotel was also home to Tasmania’s first stagecoach service between Launceston and Hobart, saw the settlement of Melbourne, Victoria, and was where the Anti-Transportation League met and agreed upon concluding convict transportation to Tasmania.

Possessing the grandeur of its original build, the hotel now offers 40 beautifully refurbished rooms. It’s also exceptionally located for enjoying everything the city has to offer: restaurants, bars, bustling local markets, the river and James Boag’s Brewery are all within walking distance, while the beautiful vineyards, lush countryside and unique Cataract Gorge are just a 10-minute drive away. You’ll be perfectly placed to discover Tasmania Zoo’s 900 acres of private native bushland, just 20 minutes away. You can also head inland to take a walk around Dove Lake and Cradle Mountain (a two-hour drive) or walk between the sea of purple flowers at Bridestowe Lavender Estate, before visiting their café for lavender-infused treats and products (a 45-minute drive away).

Man at reception was lovely & helpful. Communal kitchen was filthy, dirty microwaves with food left inside, bins not emptied & floors dirty. Rooms weren’t much better. No sheets on bed only a quilt. Very loud. Bathroom wasn’t overly clean & carpets and rooms could have done with a really good clean. I feel the whole hotel needs some real TLC and regular care.

Please don’t make the same mistake as us and READ THE REVIEWS BEFORE BOOKING!!! We arrived with average expectations considering the price point, but once we saw our room we were highly disappointed. The room was nothing as pictured online and the cleanliness of the space was nonexistent. We opened the fridge to find long strands of hair, mould on the ceilings of the bathroom and a general musty odour. It looked and smelt as if it hadn’t had a good cleaning service in a long time. We debated staying due to the cost of finding last minute accommodation elsewhere but after reading the reviews online we agreed it wasn’t worth the risk. Especially as two women we felt uncomfortable with the idea of the questionable people loitering around the halls and general lobby area of the hotel. There was the general feeling between us that this wasn’t a place worth staying and risking an unsafe situation occurring, particularly at night. We checked out within the hour and we’re sent a text asking for a 10/10 review of the property. Overall don’t waste your money even stepping foot in the lobby let alone the dirty rooms.

The room was old and very basic, which you expect for the price. The location was good. However, I felt unsafe and unclean in this hotel. The rooms were filthy - dirty, used mugs in the room, no covers on the doona, filthy bathroom, and crumbs all over the place. We were told the room would be serviced but that didn’t happen (no apologies just that they were too busy). The hot water didn’t work properly, the room was really noisy, and there were unsavoury characters around. The staff weren’t very helpful or friendly. Also, the car spaces are too small to fit a normal sized car. I will not be back and can’t recommend this place.
